<p>There are almost too many occasions for which flowers are called for in winter ' holidays, parties, romantic dinners by the fire. It's no wonder that designs tend to get a little more festive and a lot more luxurious during this season; we're in a good mood, and we want to celebrate.</p>
<p>One of our favorite things about winter flowers here at <a href="https://www.frenchflorist.com/">French Florist</a> is the palette it introduces into our home. <h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Where&rsquo;s the best place to plant roses?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Roses need plenty of sun in order to reach their full potential, so choose a spot where they&rsquo;ll receive at least six hours (or ideally more) of direct sunlight. If you live in a location that experiences long, very hot and dry summers, then planting roses somewhere that receives shade later in the day will also help.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Roses will grow in many different types of soil but do prefer loamy soil that is neutral to semi-acidic. If you are planting your roses in soil that is poor or particularly heavy with clay, you can compensate by adding additional compost.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It&rsquo;s important to note that a rose's roots will spread quite far - up to a meter wide and a meter deep, so make sure there&rsquo;s plenty of space for them to grow.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Roses need to be watered regularly, however, if the soil doesn&rsquo;t drain well it can lead to damaged roots, so ensure the spot where you intend to plant your roses has adequate drainage.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">When is the best time to plant a rose?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To help your roses establish and bloom during the summer months, you&rsquo;ll want to plant them during the spring after the last frost. Ideal temperatures for planting are between 40 and 60 degrees.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can also plant during the fall months, at least a month (but ideally longer) before the first frost of the year. This enables the plant to establish so it can go dormant during the winter months.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What you&rsquo;ll need</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The tools and equipment you&rsquo;ll need to plant your roses are:</span></p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">How to plant roses step by step</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once you&rsquo;ve decided on the perfect spot for your roses, have all the correct tools and materials and, most importantly, your new rose plant, you&rsquo;re ready to start planting.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Step 1: Prepare the area for planting</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get a good idea of the size of your rose plant's root ball, which may be fairly small (but remember they will grow up to a meter both horizontally and vertically). Use the size of the root ball as a guide for how big you should dig your hole, which should be slightly wider than the root ball. Expect to dig a hole around 18 inches wide by 18 inches deep.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Add a small amount of bone meal or superphosphate to the bottom of the hole, as well as some compost to add additional nutrients.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As we&rsquo;ve already highlighted, ideal temperatures for planting roses are between 40 and 60 degrees. This helps the plant establish itself before the high temperatures of summer.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&rsquo;re planting multiple rose plants, don&rsquo;t overcrowd them. Overcrowding can disrupt airflow and encourage the spread of diseases, and lead to plants fighting for nutrients and moisture from the soil. Make sure there is plenty of space in between each plant.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Step 2: Prepare the rose plant</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ensure the roots are not tight against the root ball and are hanging loose. This will allow them to become established and grow much quicker.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you&rsquo;re planting an established rose plant, ideally in early spring, slightly prune the canes to help the plant to focus its energy on the roots.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Step 3: Plant the rose</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Place the root ball in the hole, allowing the roots to spread out. Water the ground, then gradually replace the soil, sprinkling a light layer of bone meal or superphosphate every couple of inches. You may also want to add compost or mulch for additional nutrients. Once all the soil is replaced, ensure that the graft union is buried.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Step 4: Water the planted rose</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thoroughly water your new rose, and add an inch or two of mulch around the area. You should then water your plant every two days, making sure you don&rsquo;t let it get too dry during long periods of hot weather.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Step 5: Ongoing care for your rose plant</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once planted, ensuring it receives enough sunlight and water, your roses should establish and grow within eight weeks - sometimes sooner if conditions are ideal.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">During the spring, once the plant starts to leaf, feed it with rose fertilizer. You can continue to do this every few weeks to encourage growth throughout the season (some fertilizers may differ so check the instructions before feeding your roses). You&rsquo;ll then want to stop feeding your roses a month or so before the first frost of the year.</span></p>

<p>Long, slender stems are known as 'leggy' and are a sure sign your plant requires more light. In a plant's quest for survival, they will stretch and reach to capture as much light as possible. Leggy stems also have wide spaces between adjacent leaves. This space is called the internodal space and is much smaller in healthy plants. <p>A lopsided or leaning plant signals the entire plant is not getting satisfactory sunlight. <p>Light green or yellow leaves that start to drop off are signs of poor lighting. Without decent lighting, chlorophyll, which gives a leaf its green color, cannot carry out the photosynthesis process which keeps leaves green and healthy. Also, if your plant has variegated coloring, in an effort to absorb as much light as possible, the colored leaves will revert to all green.</p>

<p>As it is possible for a plant to receive too much light also, resulting in scorched tips or 'burnt' patches on the leaves, getting the lighting right for a plant may be tricky. Only sun-worshipping plants should be in direct lighting for 6 or more hours a day. These would be cacti, <a href="https://www.frenchflorist.com/plants/succulents/">succulents</a>, and palm plants. Otherwise, indirect bright light works best for most other plants. Just realize that every foot away from a window that a plant is moved to is exponentially decreased light for the plant. You may not see it, but the plant will.</p>
<p>Try out different sunny places in your home and if you're unable to move your plant to a better lit spot, then get a grow light, which will allow you to place your plant anywhere. Grow lights will ensure your plant gets enough light to remain healthy and happy.</p>

<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">What is deadheading?</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Deadheading is when dead blooms are removed from the stem to encourage new growth and future blooms. Deadheading roses ensures the plant keeps its shape and continues to produce beautiful flowers to its fullest potential year after year.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are two types of roses that should be deadheaded: once-flowering shrub roses (that don&rsquo;t produce hips in the fall) and repeat-flowering shrub roses. Roses that do produce hips shouldn&rsquo;t be deadheaded as this can prevent the growth of hips.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">When should you deadhead roses?</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can deadhead your roses as and when is necessary. Many types of rose plants produce flowers continuously throughout the spring and summer, and even into the fall. Because of this, when a bloom dies it can be removed to allow a new flower to grow in its place. Dead flowers should be removed as soon as possible as this will encourage new growth much quicker.</span></p>
<h2><span style="font-weight: 400;">Different ways to deadhead a rose plant</span></h2>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are two different methods you can use to deadhead your roses. Neither method is the correct way, but each technique can be used to give a slightly different look to your plant.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">5-leaf junction method to deadheading roses</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This is possibly the most popular method. To deadhead roses in this way, remove dead flowers slightly above the first 5-leaf set. Simply look from the base of the flowerhead to the first set of five leaves. Sometimes, there may already be new growth in this area - in this case, cut above the existing new growth.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the event the new growth is facing a direction you don&rsquo;t want the plant to grow, you could also prune above the next leaf set down the cane. This is also an option if the cane is damaged or too weak to support new blooms.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For this method, you may want to use any type of non-washable white glue. Adding a drop of glue will help protect the cut ends from pests once you&rsquo;ve made your cut, and prevent it from damage which can lead to killing the plant. This isn&rsquo;t a necessary step, but some gardeners will do this to help protect their roses.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Twist and snap method to deadheading roses</span></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A quicker but less precise method to deadheading roses is the twist and snap - which is exactly what it sounds like. Simply take the dead flower and twist quickly while pulling gently - this will snap the stem and remove the flower.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Because it leaves a lot of the old stem behind, it can look untidy, especially as the stem dies. Because of this, it does also lead to slower new growth which may be weaker as it may not have the necessary support. Using the twist and snap method means you have less control over the shape of your plant as new blooms grow. However, if this isn&rsquo;t a concern then using twist and snap is an easy, low-effort way to encourage growth.</span></p>
