How Often Do You Need to Water Orchids?

Watering too often is the most common trap to fall into when keeping orchids. If the roots are oversaturated they can easily rot, killing the entire plant. When watering orchids you will want to thoroughly moisten (not flood) the planting substrate, and allow it to become almost entirely dry before watering again. This can be as infrequently as once a week, depending on the humidity of your home.

As an orchid is much more capable of enduring underwatering than overwatering, it is best to test the dampness of your soil with a wooden stick, or even your finger, before deciding whether or not it is time to give it a drink. Water that is room temperature or warmer is ideal, as water that is too cold can shock the roots.

How Long Do Orchids Live?

The majority of orchid plants are sold when they are already mature and blooming - most will be a few years old when purchased. However, when cared for correctly, orchids can easily live as houseplants for 10-15 years, if not more. There are lots of things you can do to optimize this lifespan.

Place them near an east-facing window out of direct sunlight, and avoid rooms where the air is too dry - you can mist your orchid (steering clear of the flowers) every few days to replicate the humidity of their natural environment. Our beautiful phalaenopsis orchid plants are natives of Asia and Australia, so will prefer a warmer environment during the day - but letting them cool down overnight helps to promote flower growth. Keep caring for your orchid when it’s dormant, and each year you will be rewarded with flowers for up to 2-3 months at a time. Carefully removing dead blooms may encourage even more to grow next season.

What's the Difference Between Orchid Plants and Bouquets?

If you’re looking for a gift with more longevity than a bouquet of cut flowers, for someone with time to commit to its care, buying an orchid is an excellent alternative. Fragrant and luxurious, these stunning indoor houseplants add a burst of color to a room, and if kept correctly can provide you with beautiful blossoms for years to come. 

As with all of our plants, our orchids are chosen with the utmost care, elegantly potted and arranged in-house, and delivered straight to your door.

What does the orchid flower symbolize?

Orchids are thought to symbolize strength, rare beauty, love, wealth and luxury. In Ancient Greece the orchid was a symbol of virility, and people even thought the gender of a child could be decided by eating orchid tubers.

How long do orchid flowers last?

How long orchids last will depend very much on the type of orchid you have. Cut orchids can last from seven days (varieties such as Dendrobium Orchids) up to as long as six weeks (varieties such as Phalaenopsis Orchids or Cymbidium Orchids).

How much sunlight do orchids need?

Orchids thrive in indirect sunlight. The orchid’s natural habitat may be tropical and sunny, but in that locale, they’re protected from direct sunlight by a forest canopy. So, it’s important to keep your orchids out of direct sunlight and away from windows.

How much water should you give to orchids?

How much water orchids need will depend on the type of orchids you choose. Orchid plants, like our beautiful Double White Phalaenopsis Orchid Planter, only need a quarter of a cup of water a week to stay in great shape. Other types of orchids, such as dendrobium orchids, need a full vase of water to keep them hydrated and flourishing. If your orchid needs a lot of water, it will be designed with and delivered in a vase of water with flower food included.

What if I’m disappointed in the flowers?
We don’t think that will happen. Will there be a flower substitution?

On occasion, yes. Flowers are a living material, and even the finest blooms are subject to nature's calendar. When a particular stem isn't at its peak, our design team selects an equivalent or finer variety, handpicked to preserve the color, shape, and feel of the arrangement you selected.

Can you deliver in the morning?

Of course. We have Express Delivery availability that you can select during checking out. This guarantees you an early priority delivery time. Please select this time for a priority delivery time...

What details will you need from me for my order?
We’ll need the recipient’s name, the address where you want us to deliver to, and the phone number for your recipient. Most people like to send a thoughtful card message along with the flowers, so you can prepare this in advance, or you can work with our talented service team who are well versed in composing meaningful card messages that convey what you want. If ordering online or through mobile, you also have the option to leave a video card message. A video card message delivered with your arrangement is a truly amazing and novel way (a benefit only the French Florist offers) of communicating a super meaningful message to your recipient. There is no charge at all for a card message or video card message. We’ll ask just for all normal billing information. All information communicated is highly private and secure.
I’m seeking a specific flower to include in my arrangement, can you help with that?
Of course. If it is available, we can probably get it in time for your delivery. Just call or email us at least a day in advance. Let us know what we can help you find for your custom needs.
There is mistake on my order, how can I make a change?
Our customer service specialists are very well trained to help you and are motivated to make sure everything is perfect. We’re at the ready for just that. Let us know the new information and we’ll happily update your order if it hasn’t departed from the shop. Are you still delivering for today?
For local area deliveries, we are almost always able to make same day deliveries until 2pm. On some busier days, we can become fully booked for the day. If the option is not available online, always feel free to call and we can see if any availability is possible. For out of town deliveries, it’s always best to work with us before noon in your recipient’s time zone, so that we have the best opportunity to collaborate with our partner florist who is held to the same standards we know you’ve come to expect from us at the French Florist. Please give us a call if our site is restricting you from ordering and you do need the flowers today. We’d love to review various accommodations and see if we can consider getting you on the list.
How should I care for the flowers or plants?
Keep flowers and plants out of direct sunlight and away from air vents that blow air on them. For flowers, it is best to fill the vase to the very top as soon as it arrives and to refresh the water daily. You should be able to tilt the vase so that most of the water will pour out. Then refill it with fresh water. If one flower shows signs of wilting, you can just simply remove it and enjoy the remaining flowers. For green and blooming plants, wait to add water until the soil becomes dry. When watering, soak the soil and then pour off or out any excess water. If you ever want to transplant to a bigger pot, just wait at least a few weeks so the plant can adjust to their new environment before they undergo major changes in their pot and soil. For orchids or succulents, wait about 10 days between watering and provide only a small amount of water. Orchids and succulents thrive in a dryer environment! Overwatering is a very common way to cause the orchid to be unhappy!
Will my flowers look like the picture?
Yes! All photography is done fully in-house with actual arrangements we make ourselves. Everything you see on our website is ours and only ours. We have an exceptionally talented design team that uses the photograph you selected for your order to create the same thing for your recipient. There are very certain instances when one type of flower is not in it’s prime, so we will substitute with an equivalent or better flower that most closely resemble the look and feel of the arrangement you chose. Our design team’s eye is exceptional and anytime we substitute the arrangement will look just as (if not sometimes more) stunning. Our #1 commitment is to your happiness and the quality of our arrangements.
What if no one is home when you arrive?

We always retain the wonderful element of surprising the person you’re sending flowers to. If our delivery driver knocks on the door and there is no answer, our customer service team will call to the recipient’s phone number. If no one answers, we may call you to ask to advise. If our driver is at a business or residence where there is a safe location we will leave it in a safe place, and then leave a voicemail for your recipient to let them know they have flowers. We’ll leave our information as well so that they can reach out in case there are any concerns. In occurrences when we do not feel like there is a safe place to leave the flowers, we return them to the shop and notify you and your recipient, letting your recipient know to reach out to us to reschedule the delivery of a fresh arrangement at a time that works best for them. This is something we offer typically at no extra cost.

Do you deliver to hospitals?
Of course. We think it’s one of the nicest ways to show your care and love. There are so many studies that show the immense benefits of sending flowers to someone who is in the hospital. We have special relationships with all the hospitals in our area and know the ins and outs of delivering there. Rest assured our customer service specialist will reach out to the hospital and confirm that your recipient is approved to receive flowers and keep you closely updated if anything about the delivery arises.
