In the years following the Civil War, mothers in mourning gathered to grieve their sons and husbands; Mothers Friendship Days were the forerunners to our modern Mothers Day; they were organized by the mother of Anna Jarvis, who established the national holiday in 1914.

Jarvis imagined Mothers Day to be a quiet family time at home when the family could spend time together and pray.

She later filed a motion to take Mothers Day off the calendar; she was distraught over what she considered the extreme consumerism which began to surround the day.

Nearly a century later, two-thirds of those who celebrate Mothers Day will purchase flowers for their mother, mother-in-law or grandmother, totaling about $2.3 billion in spending annually.

Pink carnations are the traditional flower of Mothers Day; although pink roses, which signify appreciation, are gaining in popularity.

Nearly every country which celebrates Mothers Day does so on the second Sunday in May. Thailand celebrates in August, and Ireland on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
