women's dayThere are many days on the calendar that are significant; many days that sending flowers to recognize someone for who they are is appropriate. March 8th represents a day perhaps not as well known as most, but of great importance to the global family.

Over 100 years ago, a group of women gathered to protest the inequality and oppression they faced living in a Soviet bloc nation; within years the movement had spread to neighboring countries and into Europe. In 1909 the first rally occurred on U.S. Shores, in New York City; but it wasn't until the United Nations adopted the initiative in 1977 that the movement gained wide acceptance. Today, 30 nations including the United States have officially named March 8th as International Women's Day; in 2011, President Obama designated the entire month of March as Women's History Month.

Over the last century there have been countless women who have made history across the world for their brave journey into traditionally male oriented positions. Margaret Thatcher in politics, Sally Ride at NASA, and Amelia Earhart in aviation are just a few of thousands of examples. From Harriet Tubman to Elizabeth Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Coretta Scott King, women have been in the forefront of many civil rights battles. Today the cause is global, as social media unites our world in ways never before possible.

Although the women in your life may not be famous yet, they no doubt have impact on many people in your communities. From teachers and mentors to public servants, women continue to influence the world in ways large and small. On March 8th, celebrate International Women's Day by thanking them for all they do.
